How would you feel if someone was to rip your bones out of your body? Or torn your skin apart right in front of you? How would you feel if your flesh was cut into pieces while you are alive and breathing? Or when different types of toxins are infused into your body? There are only two words to describe these immense tortures, just two: excruciatingly painful. And that is exactly what we humans are doing to our Mother Earth.
Mother Earth, whether she was created billions of years ago after the Big Bang or whether she was created in six days by God, she has been so kind to us for as long as she lives. She gives us shelter, a place to live in. Not to forget those food and water, for our survival. She gives us wonderful sceneries, for us to recognize and appreciate. She gives and gives but sadly, all we do is take, take, take, and keep on taking.
Every step we take to move us further and sometimes we even argue for the sake of advancement, we also take a piece of Mother Earth with us. We chop down her trees. We emit various pollutant gases into her atmosphere. Unscrupulously, we pour toxic waste into her river.
Whether you realize it or not, our civilization is sitting on a ticking time bomb. The temperature of the Earth is rising at a terrifying level. Sad to say, there are still some people in this world that do not believe in global warming. Whether it is an act of selfishness or just for the sake of being the odd one out, these are the kind of people who needs to wake up from their wonderful, fairy-tale material dream. There would not be a happy ending for Mother Earth if the society could not accept that global warming is real, it is happening, and it is the result of our activities… definitely not a natural disaster.
The evidence itself is overwhelming and indisputable. Glaciers are melting. Plants and animals are either being forced out of their habitat, or forced towards extinction. Hurricanes and tsunamis here and there every now and then. And the number of severe storms and droughts are increasing. Everywhere we go, everywhere we look, the climate is changing towards the worst. And yet, the horrible and undeniable truth is that majority of humanity is yet to clean up their act.
If the Mother Earth continues to shed her tears, we can expect disastrous consequences. Global sea levels would rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of icebergs in Greenland and Antarctica, destroying coastal areas. Heat waves will occur regularly and be more intense resulting in uncountable deaths. Droughts and wildfires will occur more often, destroying the habitats of not one, not two, but many natural habitats of flora and fauna. It is believed that if this catastrophe is not put to an end, or rather just be reduced, more than a million species worldwide could be driven to extinction by 2050. And before we knew it, we could lose Mother Earth.
Mother Earth deserves nothing but our love. She is everything that we have and she symbolizes everything that our society had gone through. The wars, the rise and fall of the empires, the technology advancement, the savvy lifestyle… Everything happens right here. And that is what is at stake if we do not take action in this matter. Global warming threatens our future as a civilization on this little blue planet we all know as Earth.
Former Vice President of the United States of America, Al Gore, once said, “What we take for granted today may not be here for our children tomorrow.” He was of course, referring to the Earth. Would you like for our children in the future to ask, “Why didn’t our parents wake up when they had a chance? Why won’t they share with us the prosperous land they had inherited from their parents?”
After all, we have a moral responsibility, as humans, to solve this problem. Since the Earth is all we have, don’t you think we ought to treat it a little better? We don’t have to change our lifestyles completely; we only need to do things a little more consciously. We have to remember that our survival depends very much on our symbiotic relationship with Earth.
First thing first, love your air! We need to emit fewer pollutants into the air. Traveling via carpooling or via public transport can help to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide released into the air. Buying unleaded petrol is an alternative way to be environmental friendly. Bring back the bicycles! It is probably the kindest invention mankind has ever come up with.
Do you know that producing new products from recycled materials can save up to 90% of energy and pollution? Recycling a stack of newspaper only 4 feet high can save a good-sized tree. Recycling an aluminium can enables you to save energy enough to run your TV for 3 hours. So please… buy recycled products!
The best way to save Mother Earth is to raise awareness among its inhabitants. Educate everyone, young and old, to conserve and preserve and environment. The society should get involved with nature clubs or non-governmental organizations involved in greening the Earth or against pollution. Students should be exposed to the importance of creating a safer environment through camps, seminars, and competitions such as Poster-Drawing Competitions, Essay-Writing Competitions (such as this one), and even Speech Competitions.
Believe it or not, these are all the simple, yet effective steps that both you and I can take to help save Mother Earth. As the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, once said, “We know the science, we see the threat, and we know the time for action is now.” So, my dear friends… let us all work hand-in-hand to save the Earth before it’s too late. “For the more we can love and attend to all life around us with a loving, open, and connected heart… The more we can be in a beautiful place.”
